At times, especially in the visual, the film feels a lot more modern. At other times this is a bit docile and stiff and makes the film dated. This is really a film that you mainly know by name, but you have no idea what it really is that this one is so called (and praised?). The film wants a lot, but it doesn't really get it. Probably by showing the film through the eyes of the children, you miss a lot of nuances that don't come to the fore at all. Children also see things, but cannot necessarily place them. In the whole happening in a town that is conservative and close, there is a lot to be gained. But that is very much in the background now, unfortunately. People prefer to stay with the children who amble through the village. The lawsuit is nice but also very bare. 3.0*.

A difficult subject is shown through inquisitive children's eyes. Little by little, Scout Finch discovers the harsh reality of segregated America from her protected and imaginative environment. To show her point of view, the camera often hangs low, making the already tall Gregory Peck even more angry. His Atticus Finch believes in the rule of law to solve problems, not in primitive revenge attacks. Typical is the scene in which he sits down near the prison with a floor lamp to prevent a nighttime lynching. When Bob Ewell spits in his face, he only pulls out a handkerchief. He comes across as intelligent and diplomatic. His six-minute plea, with a deep, resonant voice, was recorded in one go.

Scout Finch resembles Harper Lee himself, who also grew up in Alabama in the interwar period. Atticus is based on her own father. Dill resembles her childhood friend Truman Capote. Someone has also modeled for "mocking thrush" Boo Radley. The atmosphere of the old South, with the accompanying accent, lifestyle and ideological conflicts, is reproduced authentically. Shadows of trees and the chirping of crickets evoke the mood of a balmy summer evening. Childlike playfulness and brutal reality are seamlessly intertwined.

Indestructible classic, which looks fantastic in the restored version on Blu-ray. The story unfolds calmly and many things and characters don't seem really relevant at first, but slowly but surely everything falls into place. Beautifully played by the entire cast, with many powerful and poignant moments. Incidentally, the acting debut of Robert Duvall, who has an important supporting role here.
