Not interesting.

Old horror is a tricky beast after all. Gothic films or German expressionism are still manageable, but I find a film like this tough and difficult to get through. I would never again refer to it as horror by modern standards, but probably that people used to look at it differently.

A very simple romantic plot in which a man tries to win the heart of a girl by chasing away possible hijackers. The film has to rely on the circus setting, which should give the romance a bit of color, but personally I couldn't do much with that. And furthermore.. there is just nothing.

It is therefore a short film, but it still drags along nicely. Acting is not very exciting, the romance never comes to life and the dark edge is rather boring. Browning doesn't really convince me, very hard to get through.

1.0*

Brilliant splurge from Tod Browning who both wrote and directed the story, so an author's film. In terms of atmosphere, setting and approach, The Unknown leans towards Freaks (1932) , the cult classic that would make and break Browning's name. As in that later film, Browning here plays on the theme of the dark or monstrous side of man, exploring the boundaries between inner and outer dimensions. Lon Chaney plays the leading role and he does it monstrously well, both on the physical challenge and on the emotional level: in this silent movie he manages to express a range of emotions in a very natural way. The other striking lead role is for Joan Crawford whose sex appeal is fully played out. Her athletic figure - broad shoulders and narrow hips - can be admired several times in revealing clothing and we can also conclude that at this stage of her career she still managed to keep her eyebrows in check. To me she comes across as more charming and enigmatic here than in her later speaking roles. Maybe she should have just kept quiet?

The storyline of The Unknown bears witness to Tod Browning's eccentricity in Hollywood at the time. On the one hand it is a completely insane story, on the other hand I am willing to go along with it because of the clock-proof logic behind it and the acting performances. The Unknown has a very exciting ending, and that is certainly also due to the sublime editing of this part. I think Browning's punishment.

I watched this film with the fairly modern soundtrack of The Alloy Orchestra (1997) and it is completely satisfactory, if you don't mind the use of synthesizers.

Tod Browning creates a horror story with a love story in it. The horror does work because the story consists of the rivalry between two men for a woman. Add a suitable setting in the circus with the necessary freaks (Browning later made Dracula and Freaks). The director himself comes from a circus past and will undoubtedly have been inspired by it.

A film style that is somewhat dated after all these years. However progressive and influential many films from the silent period are, they are usually also overtaken by newer techniques and the way of acting and directing. But it still looks pretty good in this film and the theatrical also fits the genre. A young Joan Crawford stands out in particular. Back then as a young beautiful twenties. She was seen as a successor to Clara Bow and, unlike Bow, would embrace the step to sound film with great success and win the necessary prizes.
