We follow old Isak on his way to a crowning achievement of his career. A career that has demanded many sacrifices from his environment and loved ones. Everything was dominated by and human contacts were subordinate to this. It made him a distant father, husband or friend and he was known to be calculated, self-centered and cold. At least, that's how he was perceived by his loved ones.

It is therefore the reflections during this road trip that give this film an extra dimension. The conversation with his daughter-in-law was like a revelation for him. The film intrigues and makes the main character realize that what is past, past and lost.

As far as I'm concerned, Bergman's most accessible film, and one of his best. Perhaps a film with more meaning as the viewer gets older and has more to look back on (and regret), but still worth watching more than once at a younger age and following Borg's reflections (and those of the others) to ask yourself again and again what is important in your own life. Beautiful acting by Victor Sjöstrom and the unearthly beautiful Ingrid Thulin, and beautiful cinematography. It's also nice to see Max von Sydow and Gunnar Björnstrand now in completely different roles after The seventh seal: that they are just as convincing here is a testament to the level of Bergman's regular troupe.

Ingmar Bergman tells the story of an old man who in his dreams looks back on his youth and dwells on a few things. It is reminiscent of a kind of Scrooge. The idea isn't bad and the cast does a pretty good job. But it remains superficial, or is (like cursing in the church) a bit dated in the meantime. It does not really touch and more than a good idea, that for that time is certainly something different than people were used to, this is not. I don't see the beautiful images that other directors from the 50s had anyway. Bergman will always suit me less, although he does have his own well-known style. Which in itself is, of course, a great achievement.
