The extremely skilful execution manages to push the narrative weaknesses - coincidences and easy choices occasionally threaten to take the upper hand - into the background, so that this mix of Zvyagintsev and Haneke leaves a strong impression.

Because there is enough to criticize about the entire construction and development. It is actually a somewhat artificial exercise, in which Spielmann wants to (too) emphatically control the course and the final conclusion. However, the execution is so self-assured that it remains with something that is only slightly disturbing. I would describe the cinematography as decent, but stretched to the utmost sense of the word. This is solidity to perfection. Perhaps an unusual word to express your appreciation with, yet this is the word for me to characterize the cinematography (or rather the entire performance) here. Robust, strict, hypnotic, aloof, formalistic, stylish, none of them are satisfactory in my opinion. This is just decent, without negative - or rather: average - connotations.

In addition, the film simply looks good. The run-up to an almost inevitable (violent) eruption certainly contributes to this. It is commendable that this one is not forthcoming, and the choice is made to have a catharsis at Alex's place. As Spielmann himself points out, 'revenge' has two meanings: revenge (retaliation) and a second chance. So in the end a shift to that second meaning takes place. Alex's grandfather turns out to be an important, universal key in this, while Alex's confrontations with Robert and Susanne more directly provide this on a personal level. The closure thus acquires a loaded and contemplative charge, which makes it very powerful.

Nice aftertaste and 4*.

Very strong psychological drama about a man, whose feelings for revenge are gradually overtaken by the developments around him. By bringing the haunting story without any fuss, director Spielmann manages to stabilize the film at a high level. Partly due to the excellent cast and the beautiful cinematography, this is all in all an admittedly gloomy, but also beautiful film.
I think it's a bit of a shame that Tamara (Irina Potapenko) disappears from the film relatively early. A little less cutting wood and a little more Potapenko would have liked me. But I guess you can't have everything.

Well, didn't think the film was as strong as most here claim. The acting and the structure of the story are the strong points of this film. But sometimes you have the feeling that the story goes too slowly without it also adding value. I do understand the tranquility that the film wants to radiate to give meaning to the feelings and the characters, but when you get the umpteenth scene of chopping wood and playing music by the old man, you have it at some point had. But the biggest flaw of the film are the many coincidences that are in the story. The ending comes across abruptly and a bit unsatisfactory, but given the theme and the developments in the story, it is plausible and actually daring. Nice, but nothing more. 6/10
