Sophie Scholl - Die Letzten Tage plot

"The true story of a young woman who did what few in Nazi Germany dared even think!"

Spring, 1943. The Germans lose the battle at Stalingrad and in Germany itself cautiously anti-Hitler voices rise. Sophie Scholl and her brother Hans, students, hand out pamphlets at the University of Munich when they are arrested by the Gestapo. A long series of interrogations follows, including by Gestapo officer Mohr, who becomes increasingly impressed by Sophie. However, it will take a miracle to save Sophie and her brother from the death penalty.

A war film about the resistance fighter Sophie Scholl. Curious what that would give, because many films have already been made of WWII and I'm not that familiar with the story of Sophie Scholl. The film doesn't take a heroic approach with naive teenagers rising up against the Nazis. But it is an image of some thoughtful students who nevertheless spread their ideas full of excitement. The soundtrack helps a lot with that. Beautifully filmed.

Even though there were several players in the game, the film is mainly about Sophie and that is not surprising. It is especially enjoyable - albeit full of tension - how the conversation goes during the interrogation. The clash between ideas and then it is striking how articulate Sophie is and she stands her ground. Not because she has to defend herself, but because she believes in the things she has done and written. This also continues later in the courtroom and you notice that she remains the strongest of all suspects.

The film mainly focuses on people, with Sophie in particular, of course. And that succeeds because of the build-up of tension and the acting performances. The events really happened and in real life everything would have been even harder. But the film does not only want to capture the horror of the war, but above all the voices of people who disagree with the regime. How law clashes with common sense and conscience. How the Nazis shoot a mosquito with a cannon when it comes to attacking their ideas. Just the fact that under Hitler even the wrong words and thoughts were enough to crack down…

Fascinating film about resistance fighters who are arrested and interrogated for distributing pamphlets against the Third Reich. Very strong approach to the film to focus fully on the interrogations and the trial. Pure sec and objective, without torture techniques or blows and injuries.

Pure interrogation techniques and dialogues of a high level, delivered with conviction and extremely fascinating to follow.

Naturally as a result of an excellent script and more than excellent interpretations by Julia Jentsch and at least an equally strong Alexander Held as a detective, each of whom gives the best of himself from their own ideals. Sophie was unyielding, but at the same time vulnerable and determined. It's a movie that hits me.

Very convincing film from start to finish and which shows once again what it was like under the yoke of Nazi Germany. Good looking!
