Every now and then you come across a film that touches you on every level. Prancer is one of them. At Christmas, most people enjoy a meal with family and friends and unwrap presents. Yet, Christmas isn't always a happy and cozy time for everyone, and the film plays on this. The dialogue between John Riggs (Sam Elliott) and Jessica Riggs (Rebecca Harrell) is top-notch, and they undoubtedly brought a few tears to many people's eyes. However, the film loses some of its power towards the end. For example: John Riggs (Sam Elliott) sells Prancer (Santa's Reindeer) to the local butcher, who uses him not dead but as a model. And he brags about it to the locals. Later, John Riggs buys Prancer back for the same price. If someone praises something, why would they sell it for the same price?

All in all, I think this is a heart-warming Christmas film that I can recommend to anyone who loves Christmas, but certainly also to anyone else.

A fairly unknown Christmas film.

This isn't entirely surprising, as at first glance it's not a film that truly captures the Christmas spirit. The characters are rather annoying, it's not particularly happy or cheerful, and the TV look doesn't exactly help matters.

But throughout the film, a certain Christmas spirit builds, making the ending ultimately work, and even better than most corny Christmas movies. Perhaps simply because it's all a little less obvious, and doesn't immediately chip your teeth.

It's a bit of a shame that it all looks rather cheap, the direction is entirely functional, and some characters are a bit too grumpy. But for once, it's definitely recommended, especially if you've already seen all the more popular films and want to try something new.

2.5*

This Prancer surfaced on Sunday morning as part of the pile of Christmas movies I'd picked up a while back at the thrift store. Just to see if it was for kids or not, and despite a few drawbacks, this film turned out to be the most decent on the list.

The story is remarkably simple, centered around Jessica, the only one who still somewhat believes in Santa Claus and champions the Christmas spirit. The others aren't so keen or are overwhelmed by other concerns. Dad, typically played by grumpy Sam Elliott, isn't exactly the ray of sunshine, which is understandable given his relationship and financial problems. Something that also has consequences for Jessica is that things seem to take a rather saccharine turn after the discovery of an injured reindeer. The thought that this is one of Santa's reindeer makes the almost self-evident task of caring for the animal.

As mentioned, it's a bit saccharine, and the acting isn't particularly good. It's all a bit dated, of course, and it's also slow and quite long for a film with such a subject matter. But about halfway through, it shifts into something with a bit more substance and weight. Because there's more to it, like her having to leave for family, or the animal rescuing her, and the change of heart of the other people who see it's important to her and cooperate. Because, yes, Christmas is partly about charity. Again, saccharine, of course, but for a film like this, the idea works. And so, Prancer succeeds in its quest and can be called a more than acceptable Christmas film.
