I have breathlessly enjoyed the sublime playing of Cate Blanchett and Judy Dench. I read a comment somewhere from someone who thought the movie got off to a slow start, but I don't agree. From start to finish you are on the edge of your seat.... how will this end....

A psychological drama about an old and a young teacher at a school who both have their secrets. For the most part, it is a very captivating film that builds up nicely, is mysterious and knows how to suck you as a viewer. Also because of the excellent acting. It is therefore very unfortunate that the story completely goes off the rails at the end and leaves you with a lot of unbelievability. Too bad.

Picked up because of the great reviews, because I didn't really know this one. Two classy ladies in the lead roles and that was also strongly reflected in the film. The subject may be controversial, but that in no way detracts from the film itself.

A strong film in the event of a run-down school environment where discipline, respect and order are scarce. As a (new) teacher, try to teach motivated and passionately. Except for a few opening scenes, the film doesn't go into that anymore. Attention then shifts entirely to the secret relationship between Sheba (Cate Blanchett) and the student and the friendship between Sheba and Barbara (Judi Dench).

No idea how that Barbara has survived at school all these years. She despises her colleagues, the students and her job. She is not popular, but the respect is there, she says. That cold corporate voiceover works great on the mood of the film and her character as an individual. Very mean, false and scary at times. However, her friendship with Sheba has a different purpose (which is not revealed until later, but has already been raised from time to time so it wasn't much of a surprise). Barbara is a very dominant self-centered woman who wants to control and manipulate her relationships. And with a personality like that, you'd rather not have something to blackmail you with. Woe betide if she doesn't get her way...

Sheba gave me less height. Loneliness, infatuation, looking for passion... OK, but that didn't really show up in her relationship, let alone that she was looking for that craving in a student. Nevertheless, strong acting from Blanchett (and also Dench). Pretty beautiful woman by the way Cate Blanchett with her penetrating eyes and sharp face. She was then about 37 years old.
