Family film about life, death and friendship.

Still a bit too sentimental, tearful and often corny.

The children play very well in their touching role.

This film didn't really appeal to me and that mainly had to do with the standard elements with which the story is built. It is mainly the cute children and stereotypical cultural persons that fill the film. The story will eventually end with a wealthy benefactor who will rectify the family's missteps by donating a pot of gold. It was all a bit too easy for me and quite unbelievable. I'm not saying that the film isn't fun to watch, but to praise it like this is really going a bit too far for me.

“Make believe you're happy Johnny, please, for the kids.”

Fairytale. In In America we see through the eyes of a young girl how she and her sister, father and mother emigrate from Ireland to America. And living in an old building/neighborhood with a lot of crime and poverty.

But the family knows how to make the most of it, and you feel the love the family members have for each other. Sentimental and sometimes not too realistic? It'll be fine, but it worked for me, especially since we're looking at everything from Christy's perspective. Fantastic acting by Sarah Bolger, whom I mainly knew from The Tudors. Considine, Hounsou, Morton and Emma Bolger (sister of) also deserve all the credits.
