Raw war drama about the occupation of Nanking by the Japanese. The film follows several characters, both from the Chinese and Japanese sides. The black and white was a good choice here, which strongly emphasizes the gloomy atmosphere of war. It also looks more like a documentary reconstruction than a real film, which makes for an intense film experience. Hats off for bringing the smoldering ruins of Nanking to life. Furthermore, you get to see a lot of misery from this gruesome genocide: mass executions, rapes, people being thrown through windows and that random killing all the time. Towards the end I was constantly jumping from every bang I heard. Yes, it's like being in Nangking by yourself for two hours. Heavy film, in which the Japanese Kadokawa impressed me the most; a good soul who suddenly ends up in hell. As an impression of what happened there in 1937, this film seems to me very successful, although the characters did not always get me along emotionally.

After “The Flowers of War” and “John Rabe”, this is my third film about the appalling carnage that the Japanese army inflicted in Nanking in 1937/'38, with an estimated 300,000 victims! It is a gruesome account, presented in sober black and white and without any sensationalism. That makes the film all the more impressive. So many atrocities are hard to comprehend, but it is well known that China is unfortunately not the only place where the Japanese indulged in barbaric behavior.

The problem with this movie was that I couldn't "connect" with the actors. There is constant killing and keeping the characters apart was also difficult for me. The difference between the Chinese and the Japanese? I did not see it. Maybe because of the uniforms, but that was all. And don't think I'm not open to Asian films, a film from Hong Kong passes by regularly, etc..

Perhaps the black and white in the film was also a choice that did not appeal to me and I also watch these films regularly without this complaint. Maybe the story didn't grab me?

A 6.
