Very solid drama, best known for the Oscar for Halle Berry and a famous sex scene, as you very rarely see in Hollywood films with actors of this caliber. Monster's Ball has everything for a real Oscar movie, with a poor black woman in the front who happens to be everything bad that can happen to a person. After her husband's execution, her son also falls dead, she loses her job and she has no money for a car or the rent of her apartment. It's all very dramatic. Still, Marc Foster, miraculously, does not put too much emphasis on the performance. There lies the main strength of a drama like Monster's Ball, fortunately it is presented with some subtlety; in the wrong hands, this could have turned out to be a very tedious, sugar-sweet drama. Foster also creates a strong atmosphere, with long shots and stylish editing. He also brings out the best in his actors; Thornton and especially Berry play excellent roles and the supporting roles of a Ledger or Boyle are also great.

3.5 stars.

Extremely sad situation. Drama through and through, with so many people looking for understanding and comfort and a few who get it. Beautiful and gripping start with the execution of Lawrence and how they do it in peace and professionalism. The drama broadens in that sense to include the problems at home, the child seeking comfort in food, and Ledger even committing suicide. Everything, every reaction and thought, based on prejudice or the example of 'education ', or how hard a person has been brought up. But after that, after the death of HB's child, the strength wears off a bit. It fades a bit. The hardness of existence and the choices that fall is still there, but it is less gripping than in the beginning. As for BBT's turnaround, I get what people mean by this coming quite suddenly while he apparently has so much hatred, but isn't the interpretation that it's not that bad at BBT and mainly fed by his father more appropriate? Only at his urging does he chase the two dark children off the site in the beginning. The hardness he generally displays seems to be fed by his father and he sees that and begins to change. Of course also because he gets sympathy for HB.

Very strong start, less ending. Decent drama. Top performance from HB but old Peter Boyle is also great.

“I think we're gonna be alright.”

Atmospheric drama. Very depressing, but that's also Monster's Ball's strongest point. These are characters who face horrific and heartbreaking situations, and Leticia and Hank are two damaged individuals who eventually find some comfort and hope for something better together. They aren't the most likeable people themselves, but that just makes it more realistic. Fantastic acting by Berry and Thornton.
