Message in a Bottle plot

"A story of love lost and found."

Theresa Osborne, who is divorced and left to care for her 10-year-old son, has no intention of ever dating a man again. One day on the beach, when she finds a bottle with a passionate newsletter, she can't resist publishing it in the newspaper she works for. And when she finds other similar letters, she decides to look for the sender. That turns out to be the widower Garret Blake, a sailboat repairer, whose wife was tragically killed. There is an immediate click between the two, but Theresa keeps silent that she has found his letters.

What a terrible movie. What a pity that such good actors lend themselves to a larmoyant story that is not about anything but is spun out in order to arouse as many tears as possible. And if at the end it still seems somewhat normal, they go over it again in the good tradition of Love Story. And then that terrible music, which forces you to be moved. What a shit movie. Or should I say a women's movie? Or is that offensive to women?

I found the film quite similar to Nights in Rodanthe. Not surprising really, because both stories come from the same pen. I wouldn't call it spectacular, but the big advantage that this swoon film has is the cast. Kevin Costner and Robin Wright in particular do well and have chemistry, but they are assisted by fine (small) supporting roles from Paul Newman and Robbie Coltrane, among others. The locations are very nice at times and the tragic ending does come in, although (now that I've done a few Sparks movies) it didn't come as much of a surprise to me. The only point of criticism is the playing time. It's not that I'm outright bored, but it's a bit on the long-winded side at times.

3*
