"Hombre means man... Paul Newman is Hombre!"
John Russell has lived among the Native Americans since childhood and became one of them. When his father dies, he inherits a piece of land and a house in Sweet Mary. Jessie Brown rents out rooms to her lover Sheriff Frank Braden and to the newly married couple Billy Lee and Doris Blake. However, Russell wants to sell the house. When Russell's friend Mendes can earn a lot of money by transporting the couple Faver by carriage, the Blakes and Jessie, but also a certain Cicero Grimes ride along. During this journey, tensions arise due to the different beliefs and origins.

Above average good western with sympathy for the Apache. Good role for Newman too. Beautiful images and well acted.

Quite a good western in which the story itself doesn't mean much, but the dialogues are interesting. The lines between good and bad are not necessarily those of robbers versus the victims. The moral attitude of people, their view of the Indians, ... also plays a major role. Paul Newman fits well in the leading role.
A fun fact is that actor Martin Balsam secretly left the set during filming because he was not allowed to go to the Oscar ceremony in 1966, the year the film was shot. After all, he was nominated for the film A Thousand Clowns. Balsam won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor that evening.

Good film about a man who was raised by Indians and inherits the house of his recently deceased father. A quietly constructed western that manages to be exciting with relatively little action in the second half. Well-developed characters and excellent acting only reinforce this. In the review, 4.0 stars turned out to be just a bit too much.
