Upper class Americans Noel and Meg Johnson are on vacation in Italy with their 26-year-old daughter Clara. When she was a child, Clara had an accident that left her with an intellectual disability and is in fact still ten years old. Clara's upbringing has demanded a lot from Noel and Meg's marriage. While on vacation, Clara gets a lot of attention from Fabrizio Naccarelli, a man who Mother Meg actually finds attractive.
