When Claude Roc spends a summer with the British Muriel, they slowly fall in love and eventually want to get married, but at the insistence of both families they first have to spend a year without contact. Muriel constantly looks forward to the end of the year, but Claude soon forgets about Muriel and has a number of love affairs with other women.
