Nine years after his "Jules et Jim", Truffaut cannot resist touching upon the theme of a love triangle once again.

It is a story about romances, partly platonic, partly sensual and physical.

"It is unacceptable to speak of a young girl, for that damages her reputation" outlines the puritanical attitude touched upon at the beginning of the film, while the subsequent developments follow the tone of the sexual revolution of the 1960s much more closely, which, reportedly, was not always met with unmitigated success at the time.

Actually a beautiful film, in which, alongside the quiet narrative style and convincing acting performances with witty dialogue, the stunning visual compositions are to be admired.

Strangely enough, I had never heard of this Truffaut. In my opinion, it is certainly not his best. The story about a doomed love triangle is rather vague and is further marred by the dubious acting of Jean-Pierre Léaud this time around, who looks like he walked straight out of Madame Tussauds. In terms of atmosphere, it is somewhat reminiscent of the film adaptations of the Brontë sisters' books, but remains quite far removed from that level.
