Beautiful film, black and white with a young Brigitte, excellent in her role as frivolous but threatened girl. Romance, drama, suspense and the special atmosphere of the courtroom are well mixed and make the whole fascinating. Clearly explained and as a film absolutely not demoderated. On the contrary, conditions such as now: dissatisfaction, rebelliousness and desire for independence in the youth, hypocrisy in the community...

This film pleasantly surprised me, although I didn't really know what to expect.

The narrative structure with the flashbacks (which gradually become longer as the film progresses) works well and the film remains fascinating, partly because the question of whether she is guilty of premeditated murder remains unanswered until the very end.

Bardot plays strong but her opponent also does well .

The court scenes are steeped in sexual morality, but that should come as no surprise given the spirit of the times.

This was the last Clouzot film I saw. It's authentic and a film of its time. A courtroom/crime drama, it focuses on the clash between the old (bourgeois) world and the new. Bardot and her group belong to the bohemians of French society, with clear references to the existentialists. For example, Bardot is accused of having brought a book by Simone de Beauvoir to school during her school days. It's no coincidence that SdB was the figurehead of intellectual and sexual liberation at the time. The flirtation with suicide can also be linked to the philosophies of Camus and Sartre. Ironically, Bardot herself attempted suicide around that time, blurring the lines between fiction and reality.

The old world is represented by the judges, lawyers, jury, the audience in the courtroom, and even the murdered Gilbert. And the viewer back then? Gilbert is straightforward, practicing his job as a classical music conductor. This contrasts with the free-spirited—and slutty—image of BB, who functions in a jazzy milieu. A love of opposites is always interesting.

Clouzot beautifully portrays the story through a series of flashbacks framed within the courtroom. Personally, I think La Vérité holds up well and provides an interesting glimpse into the times through the eyes of an "aging master."

What makes the film visually unforgettable, for me, is the sensual scene where Bardot meets her love interest for the first time. While it was a serious drama role for Bardot, these are the kinds of scenes you watch her films for.
