Just released from an institution for a nervous breakdown, Charlotte Bronn returns to the house she shares with her academician husband Arnold. Though he tries to help Charlotte get back on her feet, his efforts are undermined by Charlotte's stepmother Inez and her stepsister Joan, who may have had an affair with Arnold when Charlotte was away. The unstable situation at home drives Charlotte into the arms of Jake Diamond, a college professor, with whom she begins an affair. Only, Jake has a huge emotional baggage of his own, as he is the constant target of anti-Semitic attacks.
