Heavenly Creatures plot

"Not all angels are innocent."

The intelligent, yet somewhat naive Pauline Parker grows up in the dusty town of Christchurch in New Zealand. When the English Juliet arrives at school one day, a new world opens up for Pauline. Juliet has a sharp mind and a quick tongue, and exerts an irresistible attraction on Pauline. The two girls share the same fantasies, which they entrust to their diaries. But for their family, the friendship is too intimate. Juliet's parents are even considering sending their daughter to South Africa under the guise of a cure. Pauline and Juliet see only one possibility to stay together.

“We have decided how sad it is for other people that they cannot appreciate our genius.”

Excellent movie. I would like to see Peter Jackson go back to this kind of small-scale, intimate, dark and somewhat strange movies, because everything shows that Heavenly Creatures is a passion project of his.

It's a sharp and dark coming of age story, but Jackson also makes sure that the film is funny, absurd and very quirky at certain moments. This is also due to Lynskey and a young Kate Winslet, who in a natural way manage to portray two teenagers who yearn for freedom, but are always put in a certain straitjacket by the people around them. Until it finally explodes in a final section where you see what a fantastic director Jackson is.

Before coming to Hollywood, Peter Jackson was a completely different director. Heavenly Creatures is one of those films that shows that he was also very creative outside gigantic blockbusters. Inventive use of camera and surreal dream-like segments ensure that a basically subdued story really stands out and looks very original. Fortunately, the source material lends itself to making an exuberant film (it could also have been interpreted differently) and Jackson knows how to exploit that well. The film is very smooth and the ever-deepening bond between the two ladies feels believable, although I can understand that people can't do much with the acting, because this is at times very over the top and can get on the nerves. What I especially regret is that the film needs a few slices of text at the end to make it final. A little more attention could have been put into that.

It may not be Braindead or Bad Taste in terms of silliness, but here too Jackson shows his peculiar vision of filmmaking in a different genre. It shows that he is a very good craftsman who knows how to make something beautiful out of different genres.

Another Jackson.

Nice director to follow, few of his films I find really bad. Think the lowest rating I gave to one of his movies was a 2.5*, so you're doing pretty well. I had less expectations for this film because the story appealed to me less, but Jackson's energetic style comes a long way.

It is, of course, a film that is now somewhat outdated. Jackson really rubs the film in too. Everyone comes across as quite caricatured and Lynskey in particular was irritating to me. I understand that the film has to be brooding with personality, but I found hers too irritating. Maybe that's the point or part of the joke, but none the less a little too in-your-face to be effective.

Many energetic choices from the director's chair make the film a bit more fun and the camera work swings happily along, but I found the chemistry to be limited. I also really missed images that transcend the film. Heavenly Creatures will remain at the same level for the entire duration. There is nothing to be seen that seriously impresses or stands out, which made me leave the film with a fairly neutral feeling.

It's nice to see, although I would never have seen this movie if it was directed by someone other than Peter Jackson. He makes it into something that looks nice, but certainly does not transcend anything in comparison with his other work. I do hope he will return to feature films as a director, because I really miss them.
