Giant plot

"Sometimes any man can be a giant . . ."

Bick Benedict, the young owner of a large Texas cattle ranch, travels to Maryland to buy a stallion. He falls in love with Leslie and wants to marry her as soon as possible. Luz, Bick's unmarried sister, rules the ranch's household. Because of her dictatorial behavior, the conflicts with Leslie are not out of the blue. When Luz dies in an accident, she turns out to have left a piece of land to Jett, an antisocial and violent rancher. To everyone's dismay, he drills for petroleum and finds it too. Jett is getting rich, but that doesn't mean he's loved, let alone respected by his neighbors.

Director and producer George Stevens is not afraid to put a heavy dose of criticism on the deprivation of women and racial segregation in this film about the rise of the oil barons in Texas. The beautifully conceived closing images with the children's playpen speak volumes. With this Stevens was not only ahead of his time, but he also gives this epic film adaptation of Edna Ferber's book of the same name from 1952 extra cachet and color. And... he confesses his color.

To be honest, the film could use that, because in the last part – in which James Dean indulges in overacting just like in his previous films – the story falls apart a bit. As far as I can remember, it is the only film in which Rock Hudson as an actor does not fall through the ice for once. I have known for some time about Elizabeth Taylor that she was not only a beautiful woman, but that she could also act well. In addition, it is nice to see a still young Dennis Hopper at work.

It's a long sit, but that doesn't matter because it's one hell of a film, for which George Stevens received an Oscar at the time. Rightly so in my opinion.

This song by Mitch Miller was already a hit back then before the movie came out.

Indestructible classic, still great and very compelling. Three great actors at the top of their game in key roles; in addition, a still young Dennis Hopper has an important supporting role. The script is beautifully and surprisingly subtle, with plenty of room for cool humor and sharp observations about human nature. In addition, everything is also beautifully portrayed. It is a pity that the film was not shot in widescreen, but apart from that there is little to complain about.

Well .... I expected something more from this. Lately I've been busy with long classics like Ben Hur, Gone with the wind, Doctor Zhivago and now Giant. But apart from the good doctor, it doesn't appeal to me much.

The story seems interesting enough at first, especially with a tricky character like James Dean on the whole. Bick's struggle, among other things, to get his children into the business and take it over, a choice they all kindly thank for, and then the battle with Jett, of course, who finds oil on his corner of the Benedict estate, also seems enough for a good story. Yet the expected fireworks are not forthcoming, except for the scene where Dean appears covered in oil when Hudson laughs at him, the two men bicker, after which Dean cowardly punches him in the stomach. A scene that I knew and like. Those are the moments where it happens in this film as far as I'm concerned, the moments between Dean and Hudson. As far as I'm concerned, Dean comes into the picture too little to counteract the old-fashioned and dominant Hudson. Furthermore, I don't think other events rise above mediocrity, just say it's boring.

Long sitting, not very interesting, Taylor very nice to see ... well, then I'm a bit through. Not my thing I'm afraid. Interesting and fascinating again, the inferior attitude towards the Mexicans and their leaders.
