“You lay life on a table and cut out all the tumors of injustice. Marvelous.”

Rock solid classic. Doctor Zhivago is a grand epic with beautiful sets and excellent acting by Omar Sharif, Julie Christie, Geraldine Chaplin and Rod Steiger. It takes place at the time of the Russian revolution so I expected some more war scenes, but this one is mainly a purely romantic drama about Yuri, Lara and Tonya. The playing time is long but the time flies by. The train journey to the Urals provides impressive scenes, and the many scenes in the snow and ice-covered palace are a sight to behold. It's a cliché, but movies like this are no longer made.

Started with fresh reluctance after being fairly disappointed with Ben Hur last summer. I thought, maybe those great classics are not for me. But surprise, what an epic, if seen in the right order. Because I have such a DVD that is burned on both sides and I accidentally see the end first, which I only discover 10 minutes before the end, so I found the beginning all the more understandable.

Nevertheless, a beautiful picture of the time at the time of the dramatic 1st WWII, the subsequent Red Revolution and Lenin's seizure of power. Truly great but also terrifying times to live, politically. Then the fantastically beautiful nature images with the elements. How small you must feel as a person in Russia with its taigas, icy winters and sweltering summers.

Beautiful piece of history, beautiful film.

A classic of its kind. One that I hadn't seen before and which I was a bit apprehensive about. The long playing time will have played a part in that. In hindsight, that playing time is still not that bad. The film itself is dynamic enough to captivate. Still, I was anything but blown away by the film. The background or setting of the film is quite interesting with the Revolution in the background. The consequences of this come to the fore, although the emphasis is rather on the romantic love story and all setbacks or struggles that influence it.

A beautiful film, literally. Very fine fairytale images with the snow. Some of the images of homes - inside and out - are so beautiful they seem straight out of an ice sculpture festival. Occasionally beautiful close-ups of those ice crystals or flowers.

Little to say about Omar Sharif and Julie Christie. Both are doing well. It's nice to have seen it, but I won't give up my sleep for it. All very solid, but it never really grabbed me by the throat.
