Sad verve.

From the first minute it becomes clear that Galveston is not going to be a happy movie. A hitman with a serious problem constantly fluctuates between good and evil. The always strong acting Ben Foster is that troubled soul and Elle Fanning plays his sad sidekick with verve, in this somewhat dark crime drama that quietly flows on.

After an action-rich opening in which the original camera work in particular stands out, a slightly less special road trip begins that proceeds somewhat predictably. Yet Foster and Fanning manage to hold the viewer's attention. No matter how simple the story is and how it proceeds, the duo continues to mesmerize. Add to that a beautifully filmed and exciting finale, and a touching ending completes it.

Good.

But a bit insincere on the other side. Laurent apparently took a very good look at the scripts that were first thrown out, because Galveston feels distinctive, but in a very forced way. So what I'm really saying is that this feels like a film without studio interference censoring all sorts of points in the first script.

It is especially insincere in the context of Laurent, who involves as much as possible in the film in order to provoke a reaction. It's trying hard to put a sticker on Galveston that is desperately trying to make it clear that this isn't your run-of-the-mill drama, and while this critique may read spoiled and unfair, it kept me from enjoying it to the fullest from the movie.

The stylization is raw and direct, but not completely finished. Keeping eyes on the screen is almost effortless, but I think Laurent has her cast to thank rather than herself for the drama that really catches on. Very strong performance. It is annoying that something is constantly pulled in that just doesn't seem to fit. Dialogues that make so much sense that they just don't make sense. There's just something strange about this movie, and even days after seeing it, it's hard for me to put my finger on the right place to describe it.

It's a good movie. Fascinating, raw and sometimes hard. Towards the finale it becomes really surprising, furthermore Laurent mainly leans on the characters of Foster and Fanning. I would have seen a little more visual power, but all in all I can hardly ignore the fact that this is just a good film with some distinctive points and very solid acting. By the way, I thought the doctor's mistake in Foster's condition was a bit lame. Isn't that almost impossible anymore? Others will know this better.

Four stars for this movie because I think it's underrated. I like crime/drama. The 25th Hour is also crime/drama and still remains my number 1 and somewhere that is always my favorite genre. This movie does everything right in my opinion. The acting is very good and the film comes across as very sincere and realistic. The crime atmosphere but also the atmosphere of sleazy, smoking people in a sleazy motel comes across very well. It's tragic what happens in the end and you expect it to be. I like that there is no exaggerated action anywhere like real life which keeps it pure and realistic.
