Fat City is a strange film, at first glance it all looks quite amateurish. The characters are quite simple, dialogues are not particularly deep and the boxing scenes sometimes look a bit clumsy.

But that is precisely why this is a good film. The story takes place in the lowest class of society, among people who either only get drunk or have difficulty finding work for one day. The above points therefore only make the whole thing more realistic. The people may seem simple, but it only makes the drama and hopelessness that is going on among them even more real. And the same goes for the boxing scenes. There are no great boxers in the ring, but there are boxers who fight for some much-needed money. That's why these might be the most exciting fights I've seen in a movie. The fight between Tully and Lucero was especially exciting.

Fat City is a wonderful film with a leisurely pace and a great cast. I can highly recommend him to everyone here. And because he is now in the parcel service, I would say; grab that chance!

The theme song of this film is Kris Kristofferson's subdued “Help me make it through the night”. That would also have been a fitting title for this character study about people at the bottom of society, who, with an almost hopeless future ahead of them, try to work on their self-confidence through trial and error, against the current.

The settings give the film an authentic look. The acting by Stacy Keach and Jeff Bridges is well done. Susan Tyrrell is great, until she goes overboard. Or was that the intention? One of the few cinema films by Nicholas Colasanto, the original bartender in the “Cheers” series.

Atmospheric portrait of people at the bottom of society. The plot isn't much and some of the supporting actors aren't very good, but Stacy Keach is excellent in the lead role. Nice little role from a very young Jeff Bridges too. The film actually gets better as it progresses, culminating in the moody and very appropriate final scene.
