Cyrano de Bergerac is a film adaptation of a play and you can see that at times. The acting is nice, but sometimes a bit theatrical, as well as the accompanying dialogues and texts, which I did not find particularly good.

Gérard Depardieu plays the leading role adequately. It is initially quite difficult to take him seriously, because with that enormous nose he sometimes comes across as rather clownish, and he also does not seem to take himself seriously at all. Fortunately, things improve somewhat later. Visually, Cyrano de Bergerac does not look special. The decoration in terms of costume etc. is certainly there, but in terms of cinematography it is not that special. I found the first hour to be downright disappointing. In the second half it all improves somewhat, but it never really became exciting. The dramatic ending did not do much for me either.

Cyrano de Bergerac is a kind of alternative story to Beauty and the Beast. It is a love story, in which I could never really find my way. A mediocre film if you ask me, although I immediately admit that this is certainly not my favorite genre.

First (and so far only) film I come across where all dialogues are written in rhyme. A romantic drama is not my favorite genre, but I still wanted to know the story of Cyrano de Bergerac. And I was also curious because of the high appreciation for this film (Oscar nominations etc.).

The strong moments of the film are carried by the excellent acting of Depardieu and Brochet. The story itself is interesting enough, unfortunately the film is not always that captivating and sometimes feels long-winded. The first scene (in the theater) also came across that way right away. Fast and slow scenes alternate, and given the fairly long duration of the film it might have been better to cut a few things here and there.

After all the nonsense of Naked Gun, I also went on a serious tour and that was this Cyrano that I had picked up at the thrift store on a whim. I wasn't really excited about it in advance, but hey, it's a well-known title and main character, so I gave it a try anyway. It wasn't exactly a success.

What Cyrano was about had to be refreshed because I certainly know the story, why and how I would ultimately not know. That the poet with a big nose uses someone else as a mouthpiece towards his dream woman Roxanne, is common knowledge. And it must be said, it is graceful, it is stylish, it has a beautiful soundtrack and is grand in design with many extras, and it has Gerard Depardieu larger than life. A lot of good that for sure.

But do I care? Not a single f*cking moment because damn, it takes forever with those centuries of woolly and of course French dialogues, so that's three times plus or so, and as far as I'm concerned it can't be described otherwise than extremely slow and tiring. It's also the actors who get all the space in long scenes and takes, and occasionally witty reactions, still this is far from my cup of tea and I was glad that this two-hour torture was over. And that's a shame because the film has plenty of good points, I just can't do anything with it. A three for the effort.
