Right! I've got a librarian up here! And he's in a LOT of trouble!

Not very long ago with a very stuffed head stuffed up in a sleepless night: I laughed my ass off.
Today, because few scenes were really clear to me, I set it up again and guess what?
Made me laugh all over again.

Tom Hardy is a rare gifted actor. Here he animatedly combines an imposing physique with a maniacal alternation of smiles and outbursts. You sense the threat as he stoically keeps his gaze straight, because you can never be sure which of the two it will be. Perfect timing and agility on both fronts.

The best thing about Hardy is often his speech. The man is gifted when it comes to completely integrating speech and expression and often transforms his entire 'oral posture' to enhance it:
His controlled construction worker Welsh in Locke, that burly, dull American of Bane and even the serpentine growl from The Revenant. For the last two he was criticized a lot for being unintelligible but he gives his characters so much more depth with it.

Bronson also barks and yells and squeaks and sighs. Even if he performs the female half of his mime, you will hear and see Bronson's version of a female mime. Not to mention the quick changes. So impressive.

Refn is somewhat split in his soundtrack (disco and 80s synths vs classical) and the game with camera and color is also still in the finger paint here, but he knows how to dress up the film quickly enough. Other than that, this is just a one-man show for Hardy. 4*

Refn is a hit and miss director for me. More miss than hit so far. Bronson is his second best film I've seen so far, but I haven't seen everything that comes before Bronson. The soundtrack is sometimes delightful, especially that scene with It's a Sin by the Pet Shop Boys. Horribly good. The magic splashes off the screen.

Hardy is a bit overrated in my opinion, but plays strong here. Even though half the time he's in his bare ass fighting with guards. He shouts, he rants and graces the film. It's not my thing when it comes to humor. I laugh much less during film anyway than in reality because the spontaneity is often clearly lacking.

There is also not much detailed content. It is more of an audiovisual trip as we now know it from Refn. Although it is more accessible than Valhalla Rising and Only God Forgives.

Oh yeah, is there a drinking game every time "cunt" is said in the movie? As far as I'm concerned, it's a must if you, I'm just guessing, also love a movie like Trainspotting.

Bronson has become a one man show from Tom Hardy, who excels in his role as Charles Bronson. He's scary, funny, blunt, tough and freaky all at once. He puts heart and soul into his role and that makes the film entertaining from start to finish.

That is also necessary, because Winding Refn is mainly stylistically involved with the film and throws in all kinds of audiovisual references. But he forgets to make a coherent story out of it, which makes the film feel long-winded and incoherent at times. This film would have benefited more from a different/classic storytelling. How good would the movie have been if we hadn't had a brilliant Hardy?

Bronson is a successful film and knows how to entertain thanks to a no less than brilliant Hardy. In his later films (Drive, Only God Forgives and The Neon Demon), Winding Refn has chosen different themes and scripts that suit his style of filmmaking much better and which in my opinion ended up being much better films than Bronson.

3.5*
