Primo – man of few words, man of principles, man who swears by who and what he loves.
Secondo – the mirror image of the firstborn?
Secondo – many words, few principles.
Secondo – much bleating, little wool, but the abstract desire to “make it” in that America of his, regardless of the price he has to pay for it.
Who is Secondo anyway? Not the opportunist that is Pascal, not the epicurean-free-spirited Gabriella, not the faithfully frivolous Phyllis, not the ever-taciturn Cristiano who thinks his way...
Secondo is Primo minus the neurotic, minus the dogmatic, minus the fanaticism…but what is left?
Secondo wants a lot: to be someone, to become someone, to have someone. The relationships he forms are secondary to that desire. However, who can love him, knowing that he himself does not love who he is, knowing that his gaze rests not on the here and now, but on something and someone in the future. Who can, who will, who would take care of such a person, someone who thinks he is not, but he "will be"...?
None other than: Primo – firstborn…the last who will always remain, unconditionally.

Neatly sophisticated psychology (two brothers as Janus head) in this 'Big Night', with occasionally daring close-ups, swinging camera work, yes even jazzy experiments… but the film has a rhythm that a spectator today can no longer bear, and the whole print is bathed in a low-budget-looking, old-fashioned atmosphere with a pace that ripples too leisurely.

In short, not my cup of tea. Bring on that timpanoon the other hand!

2.75*

Stanley Tucci's directorial debut, so I definitely wanted to catch this one. Weekday work that is not that special, but looks reasonably away. The focus is on two brothers who run an Italian restaurant. However, things are not so good and the film is a preparation for possibly the last supper.

In its entirety it is not all that much and it barely rises above ground level. Interesting is the setting and the atmosphere within the restaurant. The stress and preparations that precede a dinner. Nice to see some dishes prepared up close. It's also nice to see the bickering brothers fighting each other.

Nice final scene also where everyone sits together harmoniously to eat an egg. Despite everything in that wealth they possess together. Not good, not bad, bit outdated. Good to take in once in a while, but not more than that.

Saltless film about two Italian chefs who just fail to make their restaurant successful. Another American dream come true. I found the ending quite bitter.

Couldn't really care because I've already seen "gastronomic" movies that were much better than this one. Forgotten again tomorrow I'm afraid. I would like to eat a timpano like that one day... it looked damn good.
