The Limey plot

"Vengeance knows no boundaries."

The Englishman David Wilson has spent more than nine years in prison. Once released, he takes the first plane to Los Angeles to find the man he believes was responsible for his daughter's death. In that search he is helped by another ex-con. Through the underworld they soon encounter the charismatic Terry Valentine. Valentine, who was having an affair with David's daughter, doesn't understand the intruders. Wilson narrowly survives the attempts on his life. This is all the more reason for him to investigate further and take revenge. Los Angeles will know that 'The Limey' (American swearword for Englishman) is in town...

Here I have to agree wholeheartedly with Speranza and Bungel, an underrated masterpiece this and imo Soderbergh's best.

There's one thing I don't understand...
And that's every word comin' out of your mouth.

Where to start... First of all, the cast, Stamp is a genius, Fonda is a great cast and a beautiful role by Lesley Ann Warren. Movie looks beautiful. Besides the crazy elaborate revenge story, the film has a beautiful sensitive backstory. Because of that alternation between nice blunt and funny revenge scenes and the quieter parts of relationships and flashbacks (nicely done with those images from an older Stamp film). The tinkering in the editing of these scenes and the mix of images, music and dialogue are really sublime and are beautifully woven together, the other images in the dialogues are put together in such a way that they even reinforce each other enormously. The very cool revenge scenes are also spot on, genius to keep filming that re-entry from outside, just perfect film imo, which far exceeds most of its genre-mates.

Tell 'm I'm coming!

The film stands out because of its unusual editing and narrative style (with fragments from Ken Loach's Poor Cow), but that does not prevent this from being a fairly standard revenge film that comes across as vague and fragmented. I could still enjoy the twist around the daughter's death . Not grandiose nor memorable without being bad. Soderbergh wanted to make too much of it and the result leaves something to be desired in some areas.

A bit of an ordinary revenge film that distinguishes itself by the portrayal of Terence Stamp (still an actor I can't "read" well) and the artificial editing that occasionally juggles the chronology without that much on me. impresses. Then Bill Duke enters the story and disappears just as quickly, but the lock in the country house is excellent, exciting and at the same time black-comic, and with Warhol icon Joe Dallesandro in a small role. In this way, the film is ultimately lifted above the average; I'm not that fond of Soderbergh myself, but I think this is one of his nicer films.
