A nice crime/thriller that starts nice and mysterious and lives on the (sometimes a bit too exaggerated) Japanese scores. Snipes plays quite modest and that role suits him. Connery is unfortunately a bit too over the top in this film. Hearing him speak Japanese doesn't really make sense. In that regard, he is again cast too stereotypically.

Towards the end it all takes too long and despite the many twists you can draw the story too easily, making the film just too long at 125 minutes.

2.5*

With Wesley Snipes on the bill you could expect an action movie, which immediately causes some disappointing reactions from viewers who are a bit disappointed. Rising Sun keeps it between a buddy film and a film noir with a focus on intrigue and a detailed story, but with a striking duo. Connery and Snipes is a dish you never think you'll see on the menu, but it tastes better than it sounds. The film provides a lot of mystery and leaves enough space so that you as a viewer add things yourself.

The film wouldn't be so politically correct these days with quite a clichéd image about Americans vs Japanese. Crichton wasn't happy that Agent Smith was being played by a black actor, but he was also unhappy writing the book. What was meant to be a critical look at Americans went back like a boomerang as he just portrayed Japanese business as unfair. In most American movies (and certainly in the 80s or 90s), even after the Cold War, the enemies are quite clichéd and of non-American origin. Fortunately, the American agents were also portrayed as corrupt here. Even the 2 protagonists don't have a white sheet.

The film rises above nothing. Because it floats between a few genres, it doesn't always know what to do with itself. And it is nothing more than a fascinating film. Without the top poster this would have been forgotten. In terms of approach, this belongs somewhat to the John Grisham films, although they sometimes had a better script as a basis.

Entertaining whodunnit with a fairly layered plot. The cultural aspects of Japanese business life certainly make it more interesting. In addition, both Snipes and Connery are very enjoyable in their pupil/mentor roles. Connery's Vulcan neck pinch is rather exaggerated and unnecessary. Carrere has little to do and I couldn't even see that she was deformed, but apparently it's something with her hand. Tagawa remains an elusive figure, but that's how the plot is intended. Keitel has a small role and must mainly figure as the rudeness of Americans in contrast to the more common Japanese mentality.

Fairly beautifully portrayed with beautiful locations here and there, especially in the more luxurious parts of LA. The latest technical gadgets here and there at the time are typical Crichton, but the idea that the Japs are much further in it is somewhat overestimated, innovation mainly remains from the US coming. Meanwhile, increasing Japanese dominance in the west has also been superseded by China's massive catching-up race, which is now a much bigger player.
