Excellent (English) film, especially in terms of atmosphere, acting and cinematography. Although unpredictable, it is just too straightforward for a thriller. I do miss the surprise elements (or even more surprise elements) that could raise the level of the script. It has become a very solid product, definitely worth watching and enjoyable, but I think I've seen too many movies to give it more than 3*, although they are 3 very solid stars.

Actually a very spiritual film with a lot of drama but also hidden humor. At times, Connery and Slater's detective skills were reminiscent of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. There are beautiful views of the mysterious monastery and the images of its interior are impressive. Sean Connery possibly in one of his best performances. Remarkable figures are presented who demand the best of all actors. That young Slater is also very good. Finally, not to forget that the church community, the Inquisition in particular, is sharply exposed.

Not an ordinary movie, but you have to see it.

The film adaptation of the much acclaimed book by Umberto Eco. A layered book that is both about religion and faith, but also a whodunit with a lot of symbolism and tension. In any case, director Jean-Jacques Annaud has put his whole soul into it, with attention to setting and cast. The castle itself may be a replica for the film, but it is based on a 13th century castle from Italy. The interior is partly a real 12th century abbey in Germany. It also looks impressive and reinforces the hard life of that time. The story shows the internal divisions in the Church at the time with theological issues of poverty, love, humor and knowledge.

And the cast is worth it too. Sean Connery received a BAFTA for his role. The biggest impression comes from Ron Perlman as Salvatore. Perlman plays one of the most underrated movie roles ever. Furthermore, a nice list of actors that shine just as much: F. Murray Abraham as Bernardo Gui of the Inquisition, Michael Lonsdale as father abbot and besides the young Christian Slater even more actors whose name does not immediately ring a bell, but who are great to watch. to see.
