Open Range plot

"No place to run. No reason to hide."

The year is 1883. Former gunfighter Charley Waite, 16-year-old Spaniard Button and cook Mose, now work as a drover for Boss Spearman, the longtime leader who drives a herd of cattle across the country. One day, when the foursome pass the town of Harmonville with their cattle and make purchases, they are threatened by the corrupt Sheriff Poole, who is on the payroll of influential landowner Denton Baxter. Baxter doesn't like drovers. When Mose is killed and Button is badly injured by Baxter's henchmen, Spearman and Waite are forced to take action. Things get complicated when Waite falls in love with Sue Barlow, the attractive sister of the local doctor.

Excellent film about a couple of drovers who are not exactly welcome when they arrive in a small town. This old-fashioned western has plenty of drama, romance and action. A leisurely pace and some beautiful shots of the majestic landscape. Beautifully portrayed characters and above all perfect interplay by Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner.

Beautiful film, cinematographically successful and with excellent dialogue between the two protagonists, with regard to acting my preference goes to "boss" Robert Duvall.

Not exactly a western by classical standards with a lot of trotting and barking, but the ending is at least "heavy", while the romance is pathetic.

Open Range is a modern, classic western. All (cliche?) elements that go with it are present. Including that so typical soundtrack. Also think of gun fights, (in)justice, the towns, fight in a saloon, staying overnight on the prairie, a romance etc. I think that 'revenge' is one of the most common themes in a Western and that is also here not different. But that doesn't make it a bad film: I think far too few modern westerns are released and was therefore happy with this (albeit somewhat older) film. I enjoyed watching it, but I can't say it's above the crowd or above average. If you're not that into westerns, I'd just skip this one. Do you also feel the need to dream away again in the American Western time without really expecting anything innovative, then you will find a very pleasant film in this. Therefore three stars.
