3:10 to Yuma plot

"Time waits for one man."

Remake of the 1957 film of the same name. Drought-ravaged poor rancher Dan Evans, along with his two sons, witness a very violent robbery of a stagecoach carrying the salaries for the employees of the Southern Pacific Railroads by the infamous outlaw Ben Wade and his gang. However, Wade is arrested. Dan Evans then, for a $200 reward, escorts Wade from Bisbee to Contention, from where he must take Wade to Yuma Jail on the 10:45 train. From the departure from Bisbee, the journey turns out to be not without its dangers and a psychological cat and mouse game between Evans and Wade begins.

The basic condition - creating a believable Western setting, has not been met due to the poor casting. Russell Crowe does put the least faithful character here, so you never have the feeling that you are watching a western. Also the rest of the headlines, the way of walking, the way of talking, voice pitch and the content of the dialogues themselves were just very laughable.

Delicious western cast in a modern jacket. The story is simple and straightforward, but I've never judged a western by that. That is inherent to the genre, and so also with this 3:10 to Yuma. This film excels in creating atmosphere and beautiful images of the towns and desert-like landscapes, and in my opinion that is the most important thing for a film from this genre. The pace is very fast, so it doesn't feel like an old school western, but it's not that there are any of those anachronistic elements to make the film 'hip'. It feels modern, yes, but it's a western through and through.
There is plenty of action, but never in excess. The characters are in the foreground, and fortunately. Christian Bale and Russel Crowe portray great characters, who don't come across as archetypal at all, but have deeper layers and motivations. I especially thought Crowe was fantastic acting; his mysterious, charismatic and not so bad after all villain character is the highlight of the film. But the other actors were also strong in their roles; Ben Foster in particular portrayed a very menacing, on the edge bad guy. The ending may seem a bit strange, but I thought it was very fitting and you can see it coming.

In any case, I thought this was a very successful western film, with a wonderful cast and beautiful images and atmosphere.

4.5*

Fine western, which tends to drama and the hardness of life in the West, rather than a western with a lot of hoofbeats and gunfire.

Bale and Crowe are on a roll as the troubled rancher and gentleman crook. Initially, the difficulty of existence predominates in Dan's case, he can barely provide for his family, fails according to his eldest son and is also pressured by a typical tenant. A very different picture hangs around Wade. Crime does pay, at least if you're careful. Dan's precarious situation results in the escort to the train. A journey not exactly without dangers such as Native Americans, Wade's gang, Wade himself, negligence and others who have a bone to pick with Wade. What matters most during the journey, however, is whether Wade is really that bad and why Dan is so eager to take Wade away...

Crowe and Bale are fine, however, I love Fonda as the Pinkerton cop and am mesmerized every time I watch Ben Foster, with this film's first ever introduction, of him portraying the arrogant, confident and vicious gunslinger Charlie Prince. Great role by Foster in facial expression, appearance and attitude. In addition, the excellent soundtrack by Beltrami, which received an Oscar nomination for good reason.

3:10 to Yuma paints a ruthless and harsh picture of the West, a film that is mainly about dialogues, good acting and overcoming and proving yourself. As a Western not much happens, as drama does and 3:10 turns out to be a more than fine film.
