Sheriff Matt Morgan is determined to catch his Native American wife's rapists and murderers. One of them, Rick Belden, turns out to be the only son of his old buddy Craig Belden, now a powerful cattle baron near the small town of Gunn Hill. In Gunn Hill, Sheriff Bartlett and the public are under Craig's sphere of influence, so Matt doesn't have to count on any support in his search for both perpetrators (Rick Belden and Lee Smithers). Craig, however, has little influence over his ex-girlfriend Linda, which might help Matt.

Somewhat in the vein of earlier "clock" westerns like At gunpoint, 3:10 to Yuma and the famous original High noon. What makes this one extra strong is the fact that Kirk Douglas is really perfectly cast in this: he is of course with that enormous sadness because of the death of his wife, but he cannot give in to it because he has a job to do. has to snap. In this way he can, may and must (as an actor) play extremely intensely, but at the same time he cannot go out of the way (and Douglas can of course overact like the best). The result is a grand performance that carries the entire film. (And when he is allowed to let his emotions run free, he immediately becomes almost scary, when he predicts to Earl Holliman what his last seconds will feel like...) This western is not considered a classic within the genre, but for me it is one of the best ever made. Compact, traditionally tight, exciting and excellently played.

This film is indeed crying out for a bluray release!! And would probably come across even more powerful in black and white... Have an older DVD release here, it's a pity that the image isn't too sharp because this is a western with class! Not too complicated story, nevertheless very strong and a great cast. I think this is only the 4th (!) movie in which I see Douglas play (after 2 Kubricks and 1 Wilder) but man oh man what a pleasure it is to see him play. Was really wondering how it would end. Find the ending of the film very apt.

So, I'm not disappointed because this is an excellent western. Sheriff Morgan is out for revenge when his Native American wife is murdered. He discovers that the culprit is the son of his best friend, Craig Belden, and wants to bring him to justice for his crime. But Belden has no intention of sacrificing his only son just like that.
The moral dilemma where there are only losers is staged very well by Douglas and Quinn; Morgan is an anti-hero rather than an amiable character. His sense of revenge and justice could count on just less understanding than Belden, who tries to bring him to his senses in every way and therefore doesn't just come across as a "bad guy". This way you get two nuanced characters where you understand both. I'm not so sure yet if I think the ending is a happy ending. I think Morgan will be scarred for the rest of his life after that because he is responsible for the death of both his best friend and his son . Anyway, I had a bad feeling about it.
And this is also the reason why this film is so successful. There were also some downsides (eg the female element) but I hardly found them worth talking about.
