Very nice movie with suspense, humor and action. And a sultry atmosphere, with a good chemistry between George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez.

Entertaining.

I got to know Steven Soderbergh from his Ocean's films. Out of Sight turns out to be an Ocean's avant-la-lettre. As a light-hearted crime film, also with the slick George Clooney in the lead, it looks like a harbinger of what was to come with Ocean's. Apart from Clooney in the lead role, there are still a lot of style cues from Soderbergh's later films (maybe earlier ones too, but I have yet to discover those). In any case, there is always something to detect in his films. Visually it is rarely if ever boring. In Out of Sight he also indulges in warm colors, then cold colors, often generated by a filter here and there. The musical support was undoubtedly hip in 1998.

With some simple editing tricks here and there, Soderbergh tries to spice it up a bit, but in itself the plot is quite simple and not really interesting. Clooney and Jennifer Lopez should provide some sparks, but I was more looking forward to the supporting roles of the likes of Luis Guzman and Don Cheadle. The first one is funny, the second one is disappointing.

Soderberg crime.

As a director, he is probably distinctive, but I can't really link a specific landmark to him as a name. This movie doesn't really help with that either, because it's not the movie I expected from him. Perhaps he should rather rely on the tone settings, because that is what this film mainly excels at.

What is especially striking is that the actors really help the story forward. Without the cast this would never have worked. So it's great that Soderbergh managed to choose exactly the right names. Clooney in particular fits this role perfectly. The one that falls by the wayside is Lopez, who I have never thought of as a brilliant actress and here too I found her a bit disturbing.

Visually not special, actually a bit too clumsy to support such a light-hearted story. In terms of editing and camera work, the film is also not exactly experimental and cannot support the actors or the story itself. The narrative knows how to captivate a little better, although that will never really become my thing. So it's especially nice that as a whole it is smooth and fast enough to keep you entertained.

Surprising here and there, but otherwise it's more the pace that does it. I was able to smile regularly, although I didn't like a scene better than the very first scene. If the film had focused more on crime and comedy, I would have liked this better, because I thought the romance was the element in the film that slows it all down. Smooth, entertaining and sometimes funny, but nothing special or memorable.
