”In my profession there is neither good nor bad. There is innocence and guilt. That's all.”

A very nice film noir, which is above all very stylish and beautifully shot. In terms of camera work, good use is made of the dark alleys and shadows, which also contributes directly to the strong, sometimes even ominous atmosphere of Odd Man Out. In that respect it is very similar to The Third Man, which is also so beautiful in that respect and also by Reed, who has a clear and strong direction.

The story is not even that special, but the execution is very good. The actors play well. James Mason plays an excellent lead role as the man on the run, who, despite his deed, manages to appear very sympathetic. He is dependent on the people he meets along the way and that makes the course not only unpredictable, but also quite exciting. Furthermore, it all looks very realistic and the choices that are made are defensible and above all very credible.

Too bad about the inevitably sad ending. Beautifully filmed again, that's for sure, but I secretly hoped Mason would make it. It doesn't make the film any less. . It is beautifully filmed, with excellent acting, a well-developed story and a great ending.

4.0* thick

Fine film noir, though it looked a lot like The Third Man in terms of looks and with all those film noir tricks (angled camera angles, dark streets) I have seen it all before. In that respect, this genre sometimes becomes a parody in itself, but I don't take Odd Man Out too seriously. So thought it was a nice movie with first a very coolly executed robbery and then a long torment of James Mason, who was injured in that robbery. He is constantly on the run and that produces some beautiful scenes. Well, it felt a bit theatrical, but with such a dramatic ending, that's okay.

Edit: Ah I now find out that this movie is from the same director as The Third Man. That explains

Odd Man Out is at first sight a simple crime film, which shows more and more signs of depth and symbolism as the story progresses. It all starts with planning a heist by some members of the 'organization', only to turn into a dreamy attempt to escape through a city shrouded in darkness. The directing and camera work are excellent. Reed knows perfectly which perspectives to use to support the exhausted Johnny and the many characters who circle him. There are many beautiful shots to admire that show the urban landscape to its fullest. The continued use of low-key lighting, combined with the falling snow, results in striking contrasts. Never before did the shady alleys radiate so much menace. It's a good example of the German Expressionist style that is often woven into film noir, although I wouldn't dare put this film in that category. Too many features are missing to label it as noir. I have to admit I didn't find the first hour very interesting. Only after the introduction of the three pariahs did the level rise exponentially and the sword of Damocles that has been hanging over Johnny's head for a while becomes fully visible. I also got an unexpected 'Blade Runner' vibe during the scenes in the squat. Very nicely designed. The soundtrack was great at times, reinforcing the sense of despair and impending death. The ending was a fitting conclusion, although the woman's motives were not entirely clear. Recommended.
