Last Man Standing plot

"In a town with no justice, there is only one law... Every man for himself."

Mercenary John Smith (Bruce Willis) arrives during Prohibition in the Texas border town of Jericho, where two rival gangs of gangs are smuggling liquor into the country. He joins the gang of Strozzi (Ned Eisenberg), as well as that of his rival Doyle (David Patrick Kelly). Once he has won the trust of both gang leaders, he begins his dangerous plan to play them off against each other. The only one who knows the doubles is the unscrupulous Hickey (Christopher Walken). Suddenly everyone is out to get Smith and all he has to do is unleash the ultimate gang war.

Tough action film in a western setting in which a mercenary brutally keeps house in Jericho. The bullets fly around your ears and the violence is not shunned. The action scenes look great. Bruce Willis and Christopher Walken play their roles well.

Once in the time of Face/off, and at that time a lover of good action, bought this film. Bruce Willis in the midst of a gang war, what could be wrong with that? Well, a lot... what a deception the film was at the time and so many years later, little has changed.

To my surprise I read yesterday for the first time that this whole is supposed to represent a remake of Yojimbo who has already been remade and is better known as A Fistfull Of Dollars. Although the concept of the mafia war in Prohibition time in a neo-noir setting seems like a nice idea, mentioning the two previous titles is actually too much credit. I can't really say much about this film unless it's the music by Ry Cooder and the presence of Christopher Walken. It all gets a little better halfway through when Smith actually works for both and plays out. And oh...the climax is decent.

But amid never-empty pistols and other common pitfalls, there's too much wrong with the film. It never gets really exciting between Strossi and Doyle, so the film can be called fairly lacking in atmosphere, lacks tension and fortunately does not last too long. Then there's Willlis who seems to lose himself a bit in this too tough and stoic character that just isn't interesting. Then there are those monotonous voice overs from Willis that bring nothing, even become annoying. Then there's the sudden hair growth on Finn's when he is shot dead and flies backwards into the street in a roll-over. It's a shame you don't get the razor over that stuntman.

No, Last Man Standing could have been a lot and didn't have to be very good to pass. But this salt-free, tension and atmosphereless whole is not good and will probably have cost a lot of money.

Hybrid of gangster film and western in which an icy Bruce Willis is stranded in the village of Jericho where he ends up in a bloody war between two gangs (Irish and Italians). He tries to take advantage of it, but his plans don't go as he hoped. There is no lack of the sultry Texan atmosphere. The sweaty characters, the orange glow of the skyline, and you can almost smell the gunpowder. In a few scenes there is a nice blast, but no character appealed to me, so Last Man Standing passed by quite passively. Definitely doesn't leave a big impression.
