Mr. Cool meets Mr. Mean

Given that half of the dialogue in the film is spoken in English, I might as well allow myself this opening in that language.

Whoever came up with the idea of pitting the coolest French actor against the meanest tough guy from the Hollywood roster of the time deserves a place on the podium... the podium of honor, that is.

A more fitting match is unimaginable.

The two create a charged atmosphere in this successful film.

Things get rough, especially at the end.

Ventura wins on points, but Gordon is hot on his heels.

The rest of the cast is there mainly as filler.

Koscina is beautiful as always and fulfills her role, although I would have liked to see just a little bit more of her. (this is open to interpretation)

But in any case, both lead actors undoubtedly draw all the attention to themselves.

As far as I'm concerned, a bad film with Ventura is also inconceivable, and Gordon is always a guaranteed asset.

I was waited on hand and foot this time too.

Actually, I much prefer the later Sautet ("Les Choses de la Vie").

Nevertheless, this film starts very strongly with Lino Ventura at the center, as a well-meaning intermediary who gets dragged into an unsavory affair and reacts to it as only our Lino can be expected to.

After that, the film literally and figuratively starts to drift, or should I say get bogged down, because all that remains is puffing and roaring in an incomprehensible situation or what is supposed to pass for an exciting adventure. At one point, Koscina is seen smiling in a scene that is by no means funny. Alright, let's go with it. A 3 for the good start.
