Gino Strabliggi (Alain Delon) comes out of prison and is determined to go the right way. He gets help from social worker Germain Cazeneuve (Jean Gabin). But police officer Goitreau (Michel Bouquet) does not trust Strabliggi and continues to harass him in the hopes that he will catch him committing criminal behavior.
