Very special movie, again. Would like to see more from this director. 4 stars. The Woos, Tarantinos and Kitanos of our time have benefited greatly from this. I am curious about the Suzuki of our time.

I'm not the first to recognize Godard influences here. This is about the movie you'd get if Godard had been interested in just the visual side of his movies, sex and violence. Yet the craziness here is also very Japanese and clearly anticipates later crazy Japanese action films, for example by Takashi Miike. I thought it was a nice video. I had to get into it, maybe because I expected a more serious action movie, but I think the earlier scenes don't go so well either. However, the serious woman and hitman number 1 make up for a lot and deliver many nice scenes. Often shot great too. There is a lot of experimentation with both story and camera. As in more films, this is not always exciting or successful, but it produces a fresh film that is often entertaining.

3.5*

Suzuki's Playground.

That's how I experienced this movie. Suzuki flies in all directions with plot development, camera angles, editing, flash-backs (and -forwards I occasionally had the idea) and sound design. Not everything was a success, but it did keep me on the edge of my seat. Nice jazz soundtrack too. 3.5*
