Impressive chanbara indeed. The opening and closing scenes in particular are very strong, culminating in the long final duel. Nakadai is a phenomenal actor, who really only needs his tormented facial expression to make a character come alive. This is also the case in Goyokin, in which he, as ronin Magobei, must assuage his conscience by going to war against his old clan.

The battle that Magobei wages with himself is especially compelling, but the inevitable sword fights that result from it are also high-quality. Also realistic: blood, no fountains. The serious tone makes Goyokin a tragic samurai film that, like many others in the genre, exposes the corruption of the clan system. Recommended for fans of chanbaras, but also for fans of westerns, for the reasons Ramon K mentions above. (Like that ending shot!)

This is definitely a fantastic Chanbara.

Good story, beautifully filmed, cool sword fights and good actors.

I therefore fully agree with Ramon K's opinion.

4.5*

With a few exceptions, I have no interest in these types of samurai films. I can't figure out what's entertaining about all those intense sword fights. The intriguing story of this film is not bad, but that's about it. Of the handful of director Hideo Gosha's films that I have seen, I think this is the least.
