"In the game of life, you can't lose 'em all."
Desperate lawyer Mike Flaherty (Giamatti) works as a high school wrestling coach. Through some dubious business deals, he accidentally stumbles upon a top athlete and tries to win over the boy's family. Just when he thinks he can do a golden business, the boy's mother shows up from rehab. She is broke and threatens to throw a spanner in the works.

Director Thomas McCarthy is a born storyteller. He has only made three films, but in a short time he has become one of my favorite directors. Also in this film, McCarthy uses characters taken from life, averse to any form of glamour. It is above all McCarthy's eye for the small things, for details (in images and dialogue), which make his films a fascinating whole. They are “warm” films that have their hearts in the right place and leave you with a good feeling. A brilliant mix of comedy and drama, with strong performances by Paul Giamatti and Alex Shaffer.

Paul Giamatti...that's one of my favorite actors by now.
And the first half of the film is really great with Giamatti as the underscore lawyer who is suddenly saddled with adolescent Kyle.
The second half is mainly about wrestling and the legal battle with Kyle's mother, which is all more familiar territory and the level becomes a bit more general.
Very strong first half, but then slows down a bit.

Picked this one up on TV and thought it wasn't a bad movie. It was convincing. It's not a great movie, but small but nice.
