The Intouchables (2011)*****, the French original, is one of my all-time favorites. It's therefore logical that I find this remake unnecessary. That aside, this isn't a bad film in itself. That's mainly due to the indestructible story, which is largely based on improbable, yet nonetheless true, events.

And yes, remakes are everywhere. Not only Hollywood is guilty of this, but also in countries like Japan, China, South Korea, India, and so on, you occasionally come across new versions of films that were a huge (box-office) success elsewhere. I'm not a proponent of that, but I can understand it.

A predictable film that reminds me strongly of The Intouchables. It's been a while, but it's definitely a good film, just like this one. Warmth, some drama, and definitely some laughs. Fantastic car too! Nicole Kidman in it and a great film!

I wasn't disappointed. No, it can't hold a candle to the original (Intouchables). Especially at the beginning, the chemistry between the two leads is much better in the original, and Omar Sy gives the film a special lightness and cheerfulness that this remake lacks. Furthermore, you could rightly say that the film is completely redundant: it's almost a literal copy of the original (only at the end they changed a few things and made some things more explicit for American audiences). If you only want to see this film once: definitely see Intouchables.

That being said, I didn't find this rip-off bad. I thought the actors performed well, especially in the second half. Moving the film to New York was a success. The film adds a bit more drama at the expense of cheerfulness and laughs. Incidentally, I think Cranston, in terms of acting and charisma, has become a true copy of François Cluzet. Well, is that a good thing or a bad thing? I don't know, actually... Nicole Kidman does a pretty good job and adds some flavor to the film in the beginning (later, I find her to remain a bit one-dimensional and become somewhat caricatural). If you're unfamiliar with Intouchables or for whatever reason don't want to see it, The Upside is an excellent alternative that does a lot well and tells the story beautifully.

It's a shame it's become a complete carbon copy. If you're going to remake it, try to give it a different twist. Give it your own touch. Take the book as a starting point and invent your own scenes to liven it up. In that respect, the filmmakers deserve little credit, and my 4 stars are actually a bit too generous. But honestly, I really enjoyed this version of Intouchables.
