Nice.

But I do have the feeling that Anderson has reached an end point here. It is the ultimate Anderson film, but it is also noticeable that he is starting to repeat a bit. Especially since this is an anthology project where the necessary variety is actually a bit lacking.

The style is really great, but I don't know if I think it works perfectly when it starts again every 25 minutes. Anderson's eye for tiny and nonsensical details is nice, but there are so many character and setting changes that it also gets a bit tiresome after a while. As if Amélie's intro is stretched over an entire film.

Also a bit of a shame that the best shorts are already in the beginning, while the last two were a bit less fun. But other than that I really enjoyed the visual style (Anderson also one of the only ones who does something interesting with 4:3, instead of that lame "it's more claustrophobic" excuse that never seems to work), music maybe just a bit too easy , in terms of actors, it is especially Del Toro and Seydoux who stand out positively.

Still enjoyed it very much, but if his next film is in the same style again, the rating will continue to fall I'm afraid. Furthermore, I don't think his style is really suitable for an anthology, I think it works better with a little more breathing room.

I am sure that in the review below I will write things that I have already written in one of my previous reviews of Wes Anderson's films. That's simply because his films are largely uniform in style. The following review is therefore applicable retroactively to all films by Wes Anderson and all films he will make in the future:

Every shot, however short, is a visually stylized piece of art. Beautiful symmetry, lighting, camera work and carefully worked out details in each set. A special combination of stage-like 2D sets and more spatial scenes can often be seen.

The film has an all-star cast, including big names such as Bill Murray, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Tilda Swinton, Owen Wilson, Saoirse Ronan and Jason Schwartzman. And some new names that are hot right now.

The script is packed with detail, every dialogue is full of ingenuity. And that is precisely why you are caught off guard and become stunned by the barrage of names, place names and background details.

And then (yet) boredom strikes; it's almost a shame given the time and attention given to the film. But it's just always the same story in all his films": beautifully made, artistically very responsible, but regularly TOO MUCH. Not everything has to be delicate and artsy all the time.

Now the number. I can hardly give very low, because the film is of good quality. Anything lower than 3.5* is reserved for films that are mediocre, ugly, stupid, cliché or even (extremely) bad.

The French Dispatch doesn't really do much wrong, Wes Anderson is a master of his craft, but because the film is sometimes difficult to get through, I reluctantly give a 3.5*. For the effort. Maybe he will surprise us all one day and make a blockbuster next time. I hope so.

A Wes Anderson always requires some extra attention. Not my favorite director, but one that I always keep an eye on. Such a director with a corner and with all his creativity on a technical and visual level is a total loss. A feast for the eyes, often with lots of color for decor and characters.

Just not always so accessible and that's often what he lacks. A lot of attention to details too, but so tiring. In terms of content he often loses me and that has been no different here. I thought that first story with Benicio Del Toro and Léa Seydoux was OK. Later, however, I craved the end.

A real star ensemble passes by and most of them are doing just fine. The dialogue and interaction are also good. And here and there the quips and situations are funny. The many details, not only visually, but also verbally (place names, personal names and the like) are just a tsunami of info that I drowned in.
