Good film about two boys who will soon have to serve during WWII and one of whom falls in love with a rich girl. Despite the simple story and slow pace, this is an entertaining film. The love comes across as genuine and the film has a nice, nostalgic and charming atmosphere. Beautiful characters excellently portrayed by the young Sean Penn, Nicolas Cage and Elizabeth McGovern.

Henry [Sean Penn] and Nicky [Nicholas Cage] are two best friends in a small American town and are about to embark on military training to prepare them for the fight against the Japanese in WWII. Nicky's relationship with Sally [Suzanne Adkinson] comes under strain just as Henry has fallen hopelessly in love with the shy but attractive Caddie [Elizabeth McGovern].

There actually isn't much of a story, but Steve Kloves' screenplay is mainly a character sketch in combination with a somewhat nostalgic reconstruction of a unique time in US history. Director Richard Benjamin embraces that nostalgia, but ensures that it is never at the expense of the characters, played by actors who were at the start of a very successful career. Also Crispin Glover (Back To The Future, Charlie's Angels[ /url]), Michael Madsen ([url=https://www.moviemeter.nl/film/183]Reservoir Dogs) and Dana Carvey (Wayne's World), each of whom would later make their breakthrough, appears in small roles.

Point Muir, 1942

Quite fun at times. It's about the last weeks in their village of two childhood friends who have to go to war. Hopper falls in love with a girl he thinks is upper class, and his buddy, the good-for-nothing Nicky, gets his girlfriend pregnant and is desperately looking for money for an abortion. Partly due to a good chemistry between Penn and McGovern and a nice eightball scene, I will definitely get a big 3*. The romantic interpretation carries a lot of weight but is certainly not disappointing. It was also funny to see that in bowling at the time, people were recruited to manually straighten the pins.
