Frances plot

"Her story is shocking, disturbing, compelling... and true."

The story about Frances Farmer. She is determined to become an actress, but not by the rules of Hollywood. A playwright convinces her to come to New York. There she notices that the theater group uses her fame to attract visitors. Her attempts to resume her film career lead to a nervous breakdown. The breakdown is partly caused by her alcohol addiction and her monster of a mother.

Film critics of the 1930s thought actress Frances Farmer was brimming with talent. I can't judge, because I've only seen one of her films that I can remember (Come and Get It). This biopic focuses on Farmer's turbulent relationships with her mother and studio bosses, and her forced stays in psychiatric institutions.

Jessica Lange fills her role in a very credible way and Kim Stanley as her mother also does not leave herself unproven. That makes it a fascinating film, although in my opinion there is unfortunately too little attention for Farmer's film and stage career.

Incredible acting by Jessica Lange but a very tough watch is this biographical film about an obscure actress, Frances Farmer, who caused quite a stir at the time. It is also a film that makes you sad, in the sense that Farmer is constantly used and abused: the Paramount bigwig, the journalist who pretends to be a fan, the mother of course and the doctors who have to treat her. As for the custody of the mother at a certain point, that also reminded me a bit of the more recent Britney Spears story with her domineering father.

Does a person deserve so much suffering? Had she married Harry York, her life would have taken a completely different path. He is the only one who always cared for her and could bring her happiness, but she just didn't see it... Or was she struck by a curse because she renounced God at the beginning of the film?
