Martin Lawrence in a buddy movie... It's actually a genre in itself. Although films like Bad Boys show that it certainly has a chance of success, there are easily as many examples where the quality of his films leaves something to be desired. The man always plays the same type, which may or may not fit in some storylines.

In this film, his character does fit and the click with Robbins is certainly there. However, the plot of the film is a bit too ridiculous and rather ill-considered. That the cheating ultimately contains that twist was actually clear from the start and then you wonder what the point of the film was to mislead us? certainly not... It is also strange that the film never gets off the ground in the beginning. Usually a film starts strong, but the chance of collapsing is much greater than vice versa. So with this movie it's the other way around. The first half is rather boring, predictable and not funny enough to keep you interested. The strength of the film is that the cohesion between Robbins and Lawrence grows nicely throughout the film, which certainly improves the quality in the second half. The second half has a tight tempo, never stops, contains enough laughter and although the predictability is still good, it is slightly less noticeable due to the smooth tempo and the accumulation of fun moments. That it is written just as quickly at the end as in the beginning is a shame, but luckily you only managed to laugh for 45 minutes. Nothing To Lose therefore ranks itself between the weak and better Lawrence buddy comedies. Thanks to the cast and the out of the pot story that comes into its own in the second half, it ensures that the whole list of shortcomings is softened a bit.

Nothing To Lose is a pretty nice comedy thanks to the Robbins - Lawrence duo. Yet the film makes too many mistakes to get the 'pass' stamp

Mediocre film about a man who has just found out that his wife is cheating and is then mugged. A cliche buddy movie/road movie (all seen before and better). Some entertaining scenes, but not all jokes are successful. Martin Lawrence does what he always does and the collaboration with Tim Robbins works just a little better on paper.
