Getting troubled youth on the right path is a popular thing in Hollywood. Michelle Pfeiffer, Robin Williams, Matthew Perry, Meryl Streep… they've all tried it. Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, tries it in Gridiron Gang with a game of football. The only problem is that the genre always comes up with the same sugary clichés. Of those problem youngsters who can suddenly turn 180 degrees and turn into ideal sons-in-law. It's such an exhausted fact. And the sport of football doesn't exactly make it more original, for example, in the same year as Gridiron Gang, almost identical films Facing the Giants and Invincible were released. Then try to be original again.

And director Phil Joanou does not succeed; Gridiron Gang does everything neatly by the book. With Trevor Rabin's sweet score, all sentimental moments and cliché morals are pushed to the foreground. "You have to respect others. Never think you're not good enough. If you want to." Open the throat well wide, because they will be pressed again by force. Remarkably enough, the film scores points from an unexpected quarter. It turns out that WWF wrestler Dwayne Johnson can act quite a bit and rapper Xzibit also has a very nice supporting role. Yet another level where you do not expect it. And also on an audiovisual level it must be said that the film is well taken care of and just looks good, there is little to say about that. It's just a shame that it all has to stay within the lines, a little originality wouldn't have hurt this film.

2.5 stars.

An over-American sports film with Johnson and Xzibit.

All the ingredients are there for an exaggerated overacting film.

But nothing is less true. Very enjoyable drama that draws the viewer along. I round it up *4.0

A film that goes exactly by the book. So predictable that it proved impossible to finish the film.
