Mad Dog and Glory plot

"A cop who'd rather be an artist. A mobster who'd rather be a comic. And a woman who'd rather be anywhere but between them."

Timid police photographer Wayne 'Mad Dog' Dobie (Robert de Niro) accidentally saves the life of mobster Frank Milo (Bill Murray), who then offers him his friendship and one of his employees (Uma Thurman) in gratitude. But the policeman isn't necessarily happy with this company.

I was halfway through the movie wondering if this might be De Niro's counter move to Al Pacino's role in Sea of Love. After all, there are quite a few similarities - the too old cop comes across a very hot young thing, and "something beautiful grows." There are, of course, very clear differences between the cops they play - Pacino is the cynical hero, De Niro is the good-natured anti-hero. And, this film probably throws it a bit more about the humor. And that just doesn't quite work, and the link to the drama doesn't work out that well either.

There's something really special about this movie, though - the most awkwardly endearing lovemaking I've just remembered from a lot of movies. That's well done, and therefore more impressive than the average flat scene.

Rewatched after almost 8 years, still an entertaining film with a reverse cast. Murray as the gangster and De Niro as the sensitive cop, this is what the actors wanted because they got a little crazy from typecasting and you can blame them for once.

Murray & De Niro take this film with a reasonable plot to a higher level, and I also appreciate Uma Thurman more and more.

I think the 4 stars I gave at the time is a bit too much of a good thing, but this film still deserves a 3.5!

Too ordinary to really stand out. I liked De Niro's twisted character as an antihero and had a few laughs with him, but his level is so high that he can hardly disappoint. Murray also in an unusual role for him. Strange free scene between De Niro and Thurman. De Niro looks just like a rabbit. However, the film works neither as a comedy, nor as a crime film, nor as a drama or as a romantic film, so that it is all neither mussel nor fish. One of the lesser films with Robert De Niro
