Ex Drummer plot

Three handicapped guys with a rock band without a drummer are looking for a drummer, fame and success. They ask Dries, a well-known writer, to join their band. Dries agrees and decides that his handicap will be that he cannot play the drums. As an ultimate, yet diabolical god, he descends the mountain to mingle with the helpless bastards. With the arrival of this manipulator, the future of the band is also at stake and it won't be long before the other members can drink each other's blood. Their only future is ultimately written in many punk lyrics: 'No Future'...

Wanton sink into the assholes folk with coarse, wry and yet also repulsive, repulsive humor. You should be fine I assume, but it is mainly Mortier's ferocious image direction that takes the film in tow. Backwards, upside down or waving furiously, it gives it with its hideous, hot-tempered and vulgar tokkies a big dose of howling, noisy energy.

The short scene in the exploded rat is also worth gold. Bizarre, absurd, but oh so touching. The times that it seeks a certain peace, often about Dries, immediately matter. All brakes are released around the tire. Dirty, sick, rancid and you name it. The flaming rock songs still make a big difference and the barely intelligible dialect even claims a second leading role.

The first is a sly, indifferent bastard who throws things upside down with sardonic pleasure. It is laughing, howling, roaring, but Mortier somehow and increasingly manages to put something poignant in this Ostend, so that that grin also starts to show wry, bitter traits. There is blood on the pole, the rock rally is deliciously hysterical and the finale strangely brilliant.

Awesome movie. The nihilism, lost generation / marginal existence of a Flemish peasant hole (here we step into the territory of Trainspotting) is perfectly illustrated by Mortier. With a little help from his friend Brusselmans .... From the magisterial opening, the film does not shy away from any controversy. The film's greatest merit is its cinematography. Mortier makes it wonderfully absurd (eg the singer standing upside down) and therefore palatable. The magnification of a banal and modal milieu (young people set up a music group) is drenched in cynicism. But there is also a sadness in it and that is why I think the film is so successful. Those images of the moto rides through the night, that score, those personal stories of the shot characters ... it also makes them victims, fallen heroes of the assholes. The film is about nothing indeed and luckily he keeps it up. He doesn't quickly throw a plot against it (here we leave the territory of Trainspotting). Too bad Mortier doesn't really have an ending. The idea of letting everything and everyone die is too easy for me. A small blemish on a beautiful film. A pearl in the Flemish film landscape that I (O irony) discovered thanks to the Dutch Top 1000.

A well-known writer is visited by three guests, handicapped as he calls them, and they ask him if he would like to become a drummer in their band. He also says "yes". And so he rehearses with them until they have a performance at a local festival. What follows is a special film with separate camera angles and lighting. On the one hand, the film is quite absurd and certainly quite funny. But on the other hand, the film is also very raw, violent and provocative. Still, the style suits me, although it certainly won't be a film for everyone. Maybe that's why. In any case, I am curious about other films by this director.
