Jason and Cynthia's marriage threatens to come to an end. To save their relationship, they book a vacation-with-marriage therapy on a tropical island paradise. An expensive joke, so they persuade three other couples to come along, in order to negotiate a group discount. But they also appear to have to participate in the therapy.

“Encouragement, Yes!”

Friendly. Couples Retreat puts a number of befriended couples in a sun-drenched resort, each with their own marital problems. It doesn't get really funny anywhere and only the therapeutic sessions provide some comical situations. Of the actors, Vaughn and Akerman are in great shape as a couple (and Kristen Bell too), but the other actors take it all a little too seriously. Favreau, Davis and Bateman can be funny, but they don't really come into their own here. The summer conditions and some nice supporting roles compensate for something.

This one was not good.

That has little to do with the cast. Bateman plays his favorite role (neurotic family man) and Vaughn is also good.

But the film is poorly written and sloppy. To start somewhere: all men have beautiful women. Not really a realistic one. Does not matter. There is virtually no interaction between the token black guy and the rest of the cast. The black man in question ("Shane") seems to be dragged by the hair, because the friendships between the other three seem to go much deeper.

Jon Favreau's character is annoying. Both he and his wife only think about cheating, only to turn
180 degrees
after a half-baked revelation. How it ends with the wish to have children of Bateman and partner remains unanswered.
The Guitar Hero scene (you notice that the film is already 10 years old...) seems to have only been written as product placement, had no purpose and was much less spectacular and/or funny than expected.

The French-accented masseur who does all kinds of dirty yoga positions is also too cliché for words.

The scenes with the couples therapists (including Mr. Chow from The Hangover ) were also not good in terms of dialogues.

Could be less, but also much better.

Four couples on a tropical island on an all-expenses-paid trip. That promises carefree holiday fun with sun, drinks and long nights. So no. Instead of uninhibited enjoyment, they (as unsuspected participants in a summer camp for couples with relationship problems) must adhere to a strict schedule and strict rules. Morning disciplines, yoga classes and conversations with a psychologist. In other words, an all-inclusive holiday that does not exactly correspond to the expectations of the travel companions.

Lots of fodder for humor. But it's not really going to be fun. It will be superficial and predictable. Flat and nasty characters too. With producer, writer and protagonist Vince Vaughn leading the way. He is emphatically present and does what he always does. So be present. In certain movies, his performance is quite nice. Not in this movie. The situation comedy isn't fun. The dialogues are not funny. Other actors like Jean Reno, Jason Bateman and Jon Favreau who can act quite acceptably run into the same shortcomings. Their characters are annoying and their lyrics just aren't funny.

The few smiles I managed to get out were more of desperation. Have an annoying yoga teacher in a tight bright blue swimming trunks make ambiguous gestures and comments for a while during a separate yoga class, and you should laugh. Whether it's funny or not. Apparently I was that desperate. Is not it awful.
