Typical sentiment.

It really is that kind of movie. Very good in shape, nicely brushed, you know from the first moment where it is going. Without knowing the real story by the way, because it is obviously based on a true story.

With an actress like Bullock, the expectations are not too high either. She's still doing well here, but I'm afraid she'll never become a really good actress. The rest of the cast is also nice, as is the film as a whole.

As sentimental and boring as it may be, on some banal level it works. Narrow, without too much surplus and without making any impression, but despite the fact that it takes more than 2 hours, it is still reasonable. A limited compliment, therefore not sufficient, but I think I expected something worse.

tear jerker.

At least, that is clearly the intention. The sentiment is very heavily imposed. In that case I need onions to achieve the desired effect. Director John Lee Hancock doesn't really make it difficult either: the ingredients are the usual. That way it doesn't work for me at all.

Sandra Bullock is still the surprise. Although she has proven otherwise, I still associate her with poorly acted roles in annoying comedies or mindless action-packed genre Speed. But she can indeed act and does that not bad here either. Apparently she won an Oscar for this role. That says it all, including about the film.

Oscar bait, in other words: solidly made, with a cartload of hyped sentiment that you get for free.

Mediocre. It starts with an introductory monologue in which Bullock tries to adopt a deep-southern accent, but lets it run in the rest of the film. The movie itself is also quite predictable even if you don't know the story. The annoying little boy finishes the whole thing in a negative way. I'm not a fan of handegg, but that plays a limited role here, it could just as well have been about another sport, it wouldn't make a better movie. 1*.
