A Walk in the Woods plot

"When you push yourself to the edge, the real fun begins."

After traveling all over the world, writer Bill Bryson (Robert Redford) thinks it's time for a trip through homeland America. He chooses the Appalachian Trail; one of the longest hiking trails in the world at 3500 km through the American wilderness. The only one he gets mad enough to go with is grumbler Katz (Nick Nolte), a childhood friend with whom he has lost all contact. Bill's wife (Emma Thompson) doesn't like the two untrained men going on the arduous journey. Her concerns are not entirely unfounded. The two get into a fight with each other, nature and a parade of remarkable travel companions.

Two old hands doing their thing... and since it's Redford and Nolte it's entertaining too. Not going deeply into the past anywhere, which gives the film a certain superficiality but also avoids all the clichés of old feuds and clashing characters again, with Redford's usual charming self, Nolte fortunately not on autopilot, many witty one-liners and some witty characters and scenes of which the garrulous hiker was funny and the tacit attraction between Redford and Steenbergen touching. Nothing special at all, but I wasn't bored for a second.

Nice to finally see Robert Redford and Nick Nolte together in a movie, but this never rises above the level of an average sitcom. Also on a visual level it doesn't amount to much, while the subject offers plenty of possibilities in that area. The charisma of both actors just keeps things going, but the script is far too casual and the dialogues are not nearly sharp enough. There are a few laughs here and there, but this is a very scanty film.

Bill Bryson lived at the British for 10 years and in that period has written extensively, and successfully, about his travels through Europe. He has been living with his wife [Emma Thompson] in New Hampshire for 20 years and is involved in a publicity campaign for a book set of his best work. After a television interview, the blood starts to creep where it can't go, and when Bill hits a junction of The Appalachian Trail, a trail spanning more than 2,000 miles from Mount Katahdina in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia, while hiking, Bill decides. to pick up his old passion again. Catherine insists that Bill bring someone, but no one seems available. Until Bob gets a call from Stephen Katz [Nick Nolte], an old friend Bill met in Europe 40 years ago. The contrasts and talents of Redford and Nolte provide ample opportunities for an entertaining comedy to say the least – based on the real-life Bill Bryson's autobiographical book – but screenwriter Arndt and Holderman completely miss the point. Only the meeting with Mary Steenburgen brings some life to the brewery, but director Kwapis again fails to capitalize on it. Temper your expectations and everything will be fine.
